About This Spot

Stepping into Ladder 1 Grill feels like entering a warm corner of Barre’s history, where the echoes of clanging bells and fire trucks have gracefully given way to the hum of conversation and the clink of glasses. Housed in a beautifully restored century-old firehouse, this spot carries a quiet sense of place—from the granite façade to the intricate woodwork and vintage tiles inside. There’s an unhurried, welcoming mood here, where every detail encourages you to slow down, take it all in, and savor both the moment and the meal.

The atmosphere strikes a balance between cozy and spirited, a reflection of its roots and its role today as a community gathering place. It’s the kind of venue where locals settle in over a carefully crafted drink or a table shared with old friends while newcomers find themselves drawn into the stories held within the walls. Upstairs, the intimate inn space adds another layer to the experience, offering a chance to extend your stay and soak in the building’s unique character well beyond mealtime.

Food arrives as a thoughtful continuation of the setting — familiar and comforting, yet with an inviting twist. Whether you lean toward the heartiness of a burger made with fresh-ground beef or the soulful warmth of a classic stew, each dish connects you to the kind of American fare that feels like a genuine, lived-in experience. Alongside this, inventive options and unexpected flavors peek through—from playful takes on traditional favorites to surprisingly bright cocktails and thoughtfully selected wines—making every bite and sip memorable without ever demanding the spotlight.

Above all, Ladder 1 Grill offers more than just food and drink; it serves up a sense of belonging. Here, the past is always present but never overwhelming, and the pace gently encourages you to share stories, savor flavors, and witness the joy found in everyday moments within a place that’s been lovingly reimagined.

This place was so cool. It had been the main firehouse un to a new ladder truck was purchased and it was too big for the firehouse. A new one was built. The 100 year old firehouse was purchased, gutted, and restored into a restaurant. This space has Inn space upstairs as well. The food here is delicious. The atmosphere is fabulous. The decor is beautiful. I ordered the turkey burger with battered fries for my main. My hubby order the fish and chips. We started with a house salad to split. Everything we had was delicious. Our server was very knowledgeable of the menu. He was able to make suggestions when asked. We loved all the firehouse memorabilia hanging on the wall. The craftsmanship of the building was left intact. As part of the experience, patrons are encourage to look around. The washrooms are super clean. One is upstairs and one is downstairs.

Wow what a great place full of Barre history and very happy to tell you all about it. The firehouse is authentic Queen Anne building with granite outside and Italian ceramic tile and wood work inside. The food was awesome but the service was absolutely wonderful.

The atmosphere was pretty cool. A lot of history to look at. We were here as soon as it opened so it wasn’t crowded at all. This place lies in a small town with a traffic problem! Downtown can get very congested! Anyway, the food and service were all great. But what really sets this place apart is the location. Can’t beat having a good meal in an old fire house. Loads of things to look at. If you’re coming mainly for the venue, get there early when no one else is there yet so you can wonder around and look at all the photos without bothering others.

Was in town and met an old friend for lunch. The ambiance is just awesome with the history of being an old firehouse. I walked around the second floor and you can spend the night here and would love to do it if the opportunity presented itself. We both ordered the burger as the server mentioned they get fresh ground beef everyday. That sold us. Both of us were not impressed with the burger. I felt it needs to be seasoned better. I had the salad instead of the fries. It’s grass what can I say. Not the star. I would go again if I’m the area.

French onion soup was delicious. A little salty, but that's how I like it! Shepherds pie was very tasty but a somewhat small portion. (It was very good and I would have liked more.) Huge salad came with it with a chunk of toasted bread which was really good.

Very cozy spot. The bottom area was really nice. Got Reuben sandwich which was delicious. Their chilli was hearty. My sister got grilled chicken burger which was good. Their honey mustard was thick and delicious with fries. The funny part was their upstairs' vibe. My sister and I both thought it had an eerie feeling to it. Almost like haunted house vibes Either way, the food was good and so was service.

The burger, decorations, and atmosphere was amazing. They also had live music while I was there. I'm looking forwarding to going back to try more of the menu.

Had dinner at Ladder 1 Grill night before last for my wife’s 40th birthday. We had the onion rings with what they call is the bang sauce (its ranch) and I had a pizza and my wife had the fish and chips. We had a great time. The parking was behind the building and you enter from the left side. My only suggestion would be to add a parking sign pointing down the alley where the parking is. It was really interesting hearing about the history of the building. We will definitely be back. Such a cool atmosphere!
